What are Sheet materials?

Sheet materials are panels built from timber. Made using various types of adhesive, it’s important to use the one which is best suited to the task at hand.

Commonly used for walls, roofs and flooring, sheet materials can also be used to create interior fixtures like countertops and can lend a greater rigidity to cupboards and bookshelves. In short, its often used to complement construction timbers.

As previously mentioned, it is crucial to select the appropriate sheet material for the job and to understand which type is the most appropriate for the project you’re working on. If you’re at all uncertain, give us a call!

Is MDF waterproof?

MDF can be treated to become moisture-resistant, but it is certainly not capable of being waterproof. Due to its properties, it risks swelling or warping if it comes into direct and regular contact with rain. With this in mind, MDF sheet materials should not be used for exterior projects or anywhere that they are likely to be exposed to water.

Is MDF stronger than plywood?

No, MDF is not stronger than plywood. That doesn’t mean that plywood is a better choice for every job, though.

Allow us to explain.

Medium density fibreboard (MDF) is regularly pitted against plywood when it comes to choosing the best kind of sheet material. As a smooth surface that lends itself to painting, and with smooth edges, MDF is a superb material for creating a decorative finish. However, it is far more suited for interior projects than exterior ones. This is because MDF doesn’t respond well to moisture and is a better solution for things like mouldings, cabinets and shelving.

Plywood, on the other hand, is far more suitable for exterior projects though it isn’t wholly resistant to moisture. Typically used for fixtures that live outdoors, plywood sheet materials are great for doors, flooring, and stairs.

With all of this in mind, the best sheet material for the job will depend on what it is you’re trying to achieve.
